As we close the door on February and joyfully welcome the onset of early spring, March is promising to deliver that vital wave of energy and growth we’ve all been waiting for. I’m sure I am not alone in hoping to ride that resurging spring wave onwards out of a winter which has felt hard for so many reasons.
Just like every month has its charm, March holds it own distinct array of seasonal delights that we can savour and celebrate, even more so after a difficult and relentlessly wet few months here in Wales.
I’m all for embracing winter weather, but this monotonous stretch of soaking, grey days has felt particularly confining and there is a collective impatience around these parts for the seasonal shift to just arrive already.
In this month’s March seasonal living list, I’m seeking out ways to embrace the change, explore new beginnings, and align with the quickening rhythms of nature.
March Seasonal Living List
Celebrate the Equinox
As we approach the vernal equinox on March 20th, it’s a good time to plan how we can pause and reflect on the balance between light and dark, day and night. The equinox is a tipping point, a chance to take a moment to appreciate the changing of the seasons and the promise of new growth and renewal ahead.
Celebrations do not need to be grand affairs, marking the equinox can be as simple as we like, spring flowers in the kitchen, a walk to a favourite spot or a special meal with seasonal produce – whatever suits and fees good.
In this post from last spring, I chose three small and easy ways to mark the day, simple rituals which I enjoy coming back to every year which might provide some inspiration.
Sort Your Stuff
With the arrival of spring, it’s the perfect time to declutter and organise our living spaces. A traditional time to sweep out the old and make room for the new. Pack away those bulkier winter coats and boots and swap out the winter duvets for a lighter tog. Add touches of greenery to usher in the season of growth.
If you can summon the strength – it’s the perfect time to refresh your home with a deep clean too. Even a few small extras can make a difference, I descaled my kettle this week and felt a pretty smug sense of satisfaction about that tiny achievement.
Get Outside
An obvious one, but as the days grow longer and the weather starts to warm up, I mean to take any opportunity I can to get outdoors after a stifling winter spent mostly inside.
The woods and verges will soon begin to fill with colour and scent and the birds will find their voice once more for the dawn chorus. Whether it’s a gentle stroll in the park, or a hike in the hills, March invites us to step outside and soak in all the big and small wonders nature has to offer.
Eat All The Greens
After a busy winter shift, our well-used slow cooker is retiring for a while – my kids will be delighted.
With the arrival of spring, our taste buds begin to crave fresh, light, and vibrant foods so it’s time to think about ways we can get more of that delicious green seasonal produce into our daily fare.
We can embrace the bounty of the season by mixing more seasonal spring fruits and vegetables into our meals. Think broccoli, kale, leeks, watercress, artichoke and wild garlic – all bursting with flavour and big nutritional benefits.
Breathe In The Soil
It’s time to get our hands dirty in the garden, refresh those window boxes or tend to our indoor plants. Soil contains beneficial bacteria and microorganisms that can stimulate our immune systems and improve overall health.
Whether through gardening, spending time outdoors, or even through certain supplements, exposure to good soil supports our immune system and improves our overall health.
Intentions for the Month of March
As we transition from winter to spring, March offers us the opportunity to embrace change wherever we find it, cultivate new beginnings where we need to, and gently realign ourselves with the quickening rhythm of the spring season.
So lovely to have your emails pop back into my inbox! Feeling totally energised and excited for March after a lovely, slow read of your words this morning.
I woke up this morning to see fluffy snowflakes falling, hence you can imagine what a delight it was to find your March email in my inbox. Reading it (with a cuppa of course) was like a breath of Spring.
Lovely to read your blog. It is good to know there are others who have felt the need to hibernate this Winter and that we are all slowly emerging.
